Thomas Gates, local pioneer, saloonkeeper,
and rancher, wanted a quicker route to his carbonate mine
in Avra Valley. While exploring the Tucson Mountains,
he found a natural canyon, marked by bubbling springs,
streams, and lush growth. Gates paid $1000 to clear and
grade the winding road over the pass, which now bears
his name.
Now,
part of Tucson Mountain Park, locals have long enjoyed
all of Gates earlier struggles. It is a perfect setting
for panoramic sunrises and breath-taking sunsets. Enjoy
the winding trails for hiking, or a challenging bicycle
trek. Whatever the case enjoy a Tucson gem. Open views
of Tucson and Avra Valley. Automobile access available
with ample parking. Open from sunrise to sunset. Take
Speedway Blvd west until it becomes Gates Pass Road.
